Start with the purpose of the exercise
The adaptation engine considers more than the name of the missing machine. It compares candidates by muscle involvement and movement characteristics, then restricts them to the selected equipment. Available original exercises can stay in the workout; unsupported ones need a suitable alternative or may be dropped.
This makes a horizontal press a more useful starting point for replacing a bench press than a random movement performed with the same dumbbell. It does not make all presses identical. Range, stability and available loading still change the experience.
From unavailable bench press to a usable session
- Open the session and update the equipment available today. Do not select a bench simply because one exists elsewhere in the gym.
- Review the proposed press and its explanation. A dumbbell floor press is a possible option when the setup supports it.
- Use the change-exercise control to review alternatives if the selected option does not fit your space or preferences.
- Check the prescription and choose a controllable starting load for the actual movement.
- Log what you completed so future comparisons use the workout you performed.
This example illustrates the decision process; it is not a promise that every bench-press substitution will select floor press first.
Which parts should stay comparable?
| Keep track of | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Actual exercise and equipment | A machine stack and a dumbbell load are different measures. |
| Reps, sets and effort | The same load can represent a different stimulus when effort changes. |
| Range and technique | A shortened or assisted rep is not the same performance. |
| Reason for the change | Travel, congestion and discomfort need different responses. |
Do not transfer a barbell personal record to a dumbbell substitute or interpret a lower number as regression. Keep separate exercise histories meaningful by using consistent setups when you return to each movement.
When a substitution is not enough
If no safe alternative fits the available equipment, omit the movement and reconsider the session rather than forcing a poor match. The app does not diagnose pain or check equipment condition. Stop a movement that hurts and seek individual guidance where needed.
A crowded-gym change may affect only one slot. A hotel-room change may require several substitutions and less total work. Review the whole session after the change, especially if the new exercises share fatigue in the same muscle group.
Equipment substitution questions
Can I override the suggested exercise?
The adapted-workout review provides a change-exercise flow with alternatives. Choose an option that fits your real equipment and review the associated prescription.
Are two exercises for the same muscle interchangeable?
Not completely. The target muscle is one factor; movement pattern, stability, range and load also matter. The app helps organize the choice rather than making every exercise equivalent.
Can I keep the plan I imported?
Yes. Importing supplies a starting program; adaptation changes the session for current constraints. Check the original import before relying on it.
